Corrosion naturally degrades a material under the influence of the surrounding environment. When exposed to oxidation, ambient humidity, the atmosphere (salinity, sulfur dioxide), and pollution, an unprotected metal surface can deteriorate and lose its physical properties. This process is irreversible, and the corroded part cannot be restored to its original state.
To protect against this and thus avoid the loss of machined, forged, stamped, or unprotected metal parts, there are two possible alternatives.
Permanent corrosion protection involves applying a coating to the surface of the material, such as paint, galvanization, electrolytic chromium plating, or enameling. This type of protection is generally applied to finished parts and requires chemical or mechanical action to remove it.
Temporary corrosion protection involves applying a protective product that can be easily removed using a solvent or alkaline detergent. The corrosion protection products in MotulTech's MT Protect range belong to this family. Formulated with the latest generation of barium-free corrosion inhibitors, they protect metal parts during storage and transport, in mild or severe conditions (maritime transport), both indoors and outdoors.
Water-repellent or dewatering fluids are conventionally applied by immersion to wet parts. They remove residual water from upstream processes (machining operations using a soluble fluid or degreasing with a detergent, etc.). The immersion tank must be adapted with a system for draining accumulated water.
Parts immersed in a water-repellent fluid can come out dry, without residue, or, depending on requirements, with a protective film against corrosion. This protective film may be imperceptible, waxy, oily, or even greasy.
All products in the MT Protect range contain active substances that work to separate water from the parts by depositing a protective film.
These corrosion protection products have low surface tension, allowing them to act on parts with complex geometries by reaching the most difficult areas (blind holes, hollow bodies) to deposit the protective film evenly. They can be applied with a paintbrush, brush, by immersion, or by spraying.
Different levels of protection and finish (thin film, thick film, waxy film) are possible depending on the active ingredient content. They can be easily removed using a solvent or alkaline detergent. The MT Protect range meets performance, durability, and operator health and safety requirements by selecting solvents that are free of aromatics and chlorine.
Anti-corrosion protective oils are available in different viscosities and with different levels of protection depending on their additive content.
Unlike solvent-based protective products, water-repellent protective oils do not evaporate and leave an oily film on the part, protecting it from oxidation and atmospheric attack. They can be applied with a paintbrush, brush, by immersion, or by spraying.
Their use is recommended for storage in warehouses and hangars, as well as during transport with suitable secondary packaging.
Water-repellent anti-corrosion oils can be easily removed using alkaline detergents or solvents.
MotulTech offers aqueous concentrates to provide temporary protection against corrosion.
These products are generally used between two machining operations to provide short-term temporary protection. When diluted in water, they leave a passivating film that protects metals against corrosion.
This is an alternative to using an oil-based or solvent-based protective fluid to protect parts between two operations.
This more economical range improves working conditions in terms of hygiene and safety (barium-free, boron-free, formaldehyde-free, VOC-free).
